Mountain running Germany: An overview of Sky Runs & Mountain Runs in Germany.
The dates for all Mountain Races in Germany, including registration, course, schedule, results and more details.
Around 100 mountain runs are held in Germany every year. Most of these runs, of course, take place in the southern region of the country in the Alps.
In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, attractive runs in the mountains are offered almost weekly during the summer months. However, there are also one or two mountain runs in the other states of Germany.
Difference between mountain running and trail running
In contrast to trail runs, mountain runs usually lead directly to the top or towards the top of a mountain. The finish line is on the mountain. Only a few mountain runs lead back to the valley. Mountain runs are shorter than trails, but have a higher average gradient. This means that there is a lot of elevation gain over a short distance. With trails, on the other hand, we often move along the edge of mountains or in hilly regions on marked paths.
However, there is no exact distinction between mountain running and trail running.
Training and equipment for mountain running
The footwear for mountain running should be adapted to the route. For mountain runs that take place mostly on asphalt or paths with good grip, it is perfectly possible to run in ordinary running shoes that you would also wear on the road. In more difficult terrain, however, special shoes are recommended - these are also known as trail shoes. Well-known manufacturers are, for example, "Salomon" or "On Running". Of course, mountain runners train differently. In training, the focus is not necessarily on running kilometers, but on the meters of altitude covered. The more, the better. In addition, regular running is done off-road or even in the mountains. Intervals on the road are replaced by intervals or runs off-road. Hill sprints are also a popular tool in training.
What mountain runs are there in Germany?
A large proportion of runs are held in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
A well-known mountain run in Bavaria is the Hochgrat Berglauf. After the starting signal at the Hochgratbahn valley station, there are almost 1,000 meters of altitude to climb on a 6 km course to the Hochgratbahn mountain station - a really tough mountain run. A run of a completely different kind is the Ummi & Auffi ski jump run, where the finish line is the World Cup ski jump in Reit am Winkl.
