Kenya is the country of runners!

No other country in the world has as many successful marathon runners as Kenya. For example, the last four men's world records were all set by runners from Kenya.

In 2011, Patrick Makau snatched the then world record from Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie at the Berlin Marathon. Makau's world record time of 2:03:38 hours lasted only two years, however. In 2013, his teammate Wilson Kipsang also ran 2:03:23 in Berlin. But he was only allowed to boast in his world record for one year before Dennis Kimetto managed the first time under 2:03 hours with 2:02:57 hours. Four years later, Eliud Kipchoge set the next world record for a Kenyan runner with a fabulous time of 2:01:39 hours. Among the women, Mary Keitany, Ruth Chepngetich, Gladys Cherono, Brigid Kosgei and Vivian Cheruiyot are among the fastest marathon runners in the world.

Most of Kenya's top runners train in Iten to compete successfully in major running events outside Kenya during the year. In Kenya itself, there are only a few large and well-known running events.

The biggest running events in Kenya

The biggest marathon in Kenya is held in the capital city of Nairobi. The Nairobi Marathon was first held in 2003. In the meantime, the event has more than 5,000 registered runners. Of course, a number of talented runners from Kenya are among the top finishers. The event is usually held at the end of October.

A great adventure in Kenya is also the "Amazing Maasai Marathon and Half Marathon", where the proceeds are invested in local school education.
