New York Running: The Five Boroughs and Upstate Gems
New York is home to perhaps the most iconic road race in the world, defining its running culture with a spectacular urban challenge. The New York City Marathon is the centerpiece, a World Marathon Major that is legendary for its course that passes through all five boroughs—Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. The race is a massive celebration, known for the incredible energy from the crowds, the challenging bridges, and the emotional finish line in Central Park.
Beyond the City: Upstate and Unique Challenges
While the NYC Marathon is the biggest draw, the rest of the state offers starkly different and equally rewarding races. In Upstate New York, the Wineglass Marathon in Corning is an extremely popular Boston Marathon qualifying event. The course is famously fast, flat, and features beautiful autumn scenery as it runs through the Finger Lakes region, attracting serious runners aiming for a personal best on smooth terrain.
Another unique event is the Hudson Valley Marathon, which provides a scenic route that includes crossing the iconic Walkway Over the Hudson, an elevated park with breathtaking views of the river and surrounding landscape. For those looking for a truly different test of endurance, the annual Empire State Building Run-Up challenges participants to race up 86 flights of stairs inside the famous skyscraper, proving that running in New York involves far more than just flat pavement.
