Ohio Running: The Three 'C' Challenge and Meaningful Miles
Ohio's running calendar is anchored by three major city marathons—in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati—all offering competitive, well-organized courses. The Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & Half Marathon stands out as "America's Most Meaningful Race." The flat and fast course in the state capital attracts a large field and is a popular Boston Qualifier. More uniquely, the race dedicates each mile to a "Patient Champion" from the Children's Hospital, creating a deeply motivational experience for every runner as they pass the inspirational children and their families.
Cincinnati's Quirky and Challenging Course
In Cincinnati, the Flying Pig Marathon (and Half Marathon) is famous for its quirky charm and unique course, which earned it the nickname "Porkopolis" decades ago. The race is known for being challenging, winding through several of the city's seven hills, and even crossing the Ohio River into Northern Kentucky before returning to the finish line downtown. It’s a full weekend event renowned for its festive atmosphere and the unique Skyline Chili 3-Way and 4-Way Challenges for multi-race participants.
Completing the major trio is the Cleveland Marathon, one of the oldest marathons in the country, which offers a speedy, scenic course along the city’s lakefront. With these three massive events, plus the long-running Athens Marathon, Ohio ensures that runners always have a well-supported, high-quality, and meaningful race to pursue in the Midwest.
