Poland is known for its many marathons and half marathons in the cities.

Almost every major city in Poland hosts a major marathon or half-marathon event every year.

An independent country since 1918, Poland is itself one of the strongest track and field nations in Europe. Well-known Polish track and field athletes include Marcin Lewandowski and Anita Wlodarczyk. Lewandowski is one of the most successful middle-distance runners in Europe. He has been European champion several times in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters. The runner from Szczecin even won a medal at world championships against stronger competition from Africa.

Other national sports in Poland include ski jumping, cross-country skiing, swimming, bridge, tennis and, of course, soccer. Speaking of ski jumping: In the summer, there's the Red Bull 400, a short but extremely tough mountain race up the ski jump in Zakopane

The biggest running events in Poland

If you want to participate in a marathon event in Poland, you'll be spoiled for choice. In the south of Poland, not far from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, there is the Cracovia Marathon. With 5,000 marathon runners, the field of participants has been quite respectable since the annual spring marathon in 2002.

In the fall, the Polish capital Warsaw hosts the 42.195-kilometer Warsaw Marathon. The field of participants is similar in size to the marathon in Krakow. This is also true for the Wroclaw Marathon. Here, too, more than 5,000 athletes tackle the marathon distance. A third autumn classic in Poland is the Poznan Marathon, whose field of participants is similar in size to the previously mentioned marathons. Poznan is also home to the Poznan Half Marathon, a very large half marathon competition held in the spring.

Triathlons in Poland

So you have enough choice of big city marathons in Poland. And triathletes can also enjoy some great sporting events in Poland, such as the IRONMAN Gdynia in August or the 5150 Warsaw in June.
