Just over seven months have passed since the last edition of the Haspa Marathon Hamburg.
After being held in September for the first time last year, the marathon in the Hanseatic city has now returned to its traditional date in April.
Again with half marathon
In addition to the marathon race, a half marathon was also held for the fourth time. In addition, the relay marathon was also part of the running program.
Attack on the course record of the world record holder
Since the course records at the Hamburg Marathon are now several years old, this year an elite field was signed up, which was more top-class than it has been for a long time. In the men's race, several superstars were expected to attack the nine-year-old course record of marathon world record holder Eliud Kipochge. He ran a time of 2:05:30 hours in Hamburg in 2013.
Arrived with the tailwind of a Berlin victory
Guye Adola in particular can claim that this time is within the realm of possibility. The Ethiopian ran an outstanding time of 2:03:46 hours in 2017 on his marathon debut. Back then, he was only narrowly beaten by Eliud Kipchoge at the Berlin Marathon. It was still the fastest marathon debut ever. Four years later, Adola was back at the start in Berlin, where he triumphed after a tactical race with 2:05:45 hours. Now he wanted to take the next victory in Germany and ideally even the course record.
Junior world record holder with comeback
The comeback of junior marathon world record holder Tsegaye Mekonnen was also eagerly awaited. He celebrated his greatest career success in 2014 at the age of 18 when he won the Dubai Marathon in 2:04:32 hours. After that, Mekonnen was hardly able to match his performance, although he even won the marathon in Hamburg in 2017 with 2:07:26 hours. Since 2019, however, Mekonnen did not compete in a single international race. Now he was aiming to make a comeback at the Hamburg Marathon.
Other contenders for victory were Ethiopians Kinde Atanaw and Abebe Degefa, who arrived with best times under 2:05 hours. Kenya's Barselius Kipyego was also among the top favorites to win.
World record holder with marathon premiere
In the women's race, Yalemzerf Yehualaw was the clear top favorite, even though she had never run a marathon before. However, since the Ethiopian holds the world record over the 10-kilometer distance (29:14 minutes) and is the second-fastest athlete of all time over the half-marathon distance with 1:03:51 hours, she naturally still had to be assigned the role of favorite. On her debut, she was also expected to set her sights on the course record set in 2016 by Meselech Melkamu, who finished the marathon in 2:21:55 at the time. Also competing in Hamburg was last year's winner Gadise Mulu.
Strong German team
Philipp Pflieger and Johannes Motschmann, among others, competed for Germany in the men's race. In the women's race, Deborah Schöneborn and Kristina Hendel were hoping for top places. They all also wanted to give a recommendation for the European Championship marathon this summer in Munich.
Course record of world record holder pulverized
In almost perfect conditions (light wind) four runners remained under the nine-year-old course record of marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
Kenyan Cybrian Kotut and Stephen Kissa from Uganda fought for victory until the last meter. Kotut had the better reserves, triumphing after 2:04:47 hours by a razor-thin margin over Kissa (2:04:48 hours).
Workineh Tadesse (Ethiopia) and Victor Kiplangat (Uganda) also stayed under the old course record.
Germany's runners disappoint
The marathon did not go according to plan for Johannes Motschmann and Philipp Pflieger. While Pflieger had to end the race prematurely, Motschmann missed the marathon European Championship limit for Munich.
In the end even Florian Röser was the best German in 21st place with 2:15:03 hours. Johannes Motschmann followed a good two minutes later in 24th place after 2:17:08 hours.
World class time from Yehualaw
The Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw was responsible for the most outstanding performance of the day. With 2:17:23 hours, she not only improved the course record by more than four minutes, but even made it into the top 10 of the perpetual marathon best list. Only five runners have ever been faster than Yehualaw, who also set a national record for Ethiopia.
It was also the fastest marathon debut ever and the fastest women's marathon time on German soil.
Kristina Hendel in the Top 5
The fastest German was Kristina Hendel, who was also the best non-African in fifth place in 2:27:29. Also in the top 10 was Deborah Schöneborn (2:29:51, 9th place).
