After the Milano Marathon was held only as an elite race last year, thousands of hobby runners were able to participate again in 2022.

Thus, many sportsmen and sportswomen could actively enjoy the 20th anniversary of the Milano Marathon. The starting gun was fired at 9 a.m. on April 3, 2022, in Piazza Castello.

After just over two hours, the first professionals were back at the finish line. It was only last year that Milan proved to be one of the fastest marathon cities in the world.

Historic year without amateur runners

At that time Ekiru Titus ran himself into the history books with an unbelievable 2:02:57 hours. He was less than 80 seconds away from the marathon world record and only the sixth runner to run a marathon time under 2:03 hours. In addition, he ranked 5th in the perpetual world best list. 2021 also achieved a historic feat in the women's race. Gebrekidan Geremaryam ensured the first marathon time under 2:20 hours in Milan with 2:19:35 hours.

In the men's race, Amedework Walelegn was among the favorites to win. The World Championship medalist holds a half marathon best time of 58:40 minutes and competed in his second marathon in Milan. In the women's race, Vivian Kiplagat was the top favorite. She already won the marathon in Milan in 2019

The fast course through Milan

The Milan Marathon was expected to be similarly fast this year. Among other things, the athletes got to see the old town, the Milan Cathedral and the San Siro before reaching the finish line at Corso Sempione.

Milan triple by Titus Ekiru

For Titus Ekiru it was the third victory in a row at the Milan Marathon after 2019 and 2021, even if he missed the third course record in a row. Because with 2:05:05 hours, the runner from Kenya missed his own course record by more than two minutes.

On the other hand, Titus Ekiru continued another impressive series: In all of his marathons since 2018, which he also finished successfully, he reached the finish line as the winner. Since 2018 it was his tenth marathon start, seven of which he won, the remaining 3 he had to stop early. Moreover, it was not only his third marathon victory in a row in Milan, but also his third marathon victory in a row since 2020, because in his two starts in 2021 he was successful in each case.

Second place in Milan, just 15 seconds behind, went to his compatriot Daniel Kipkore Kibet.

Clear victory in the women's race

In the women's race, top favorite Vivian Jerono Kiplagat won. The 2019 winner ran an outstanding 2:20:18 hours and had a lead of more than two minutes over the second-placed Ethiopian Tilahun Getahun Sintayehu.
