British athlete Davis and Moroccan athlete Boutoil smash the Zafiro Palma Marathon Mallorca 2022 records
6,000 runners over the three distances (9, 21 and 42 kilometres) joined the Zafiro Palma Marathon Mallorca held today.
Louise Cartmell and James McKenzie were the winners of the half marathon, and Sofía Luna and Yennick Reihs won the triumph in the 9km race on a perfect morning in the centre of Palma.
The great running festival in the Balearic Islands brought together a total of 6,000 runners over the three distances of the Zafiro Palma Marathon Mallorca 2022, and crowned British Julia Davis and Moroccan Aziz Boutoil as the winners of the main distance and set two circuit records. Davis clocked in 2h42:52, lowering the previous record of 2010 by almost 5 minutes, and managed to get into the top 5 overall, in a race marked by the high level of women and by a participation of more than 40%. Boutoil, the Moroccan who lives and is federated in the Balearic Islands, beat the best time ever achieved in this race by one minute, with 2h27:14, in what has been his debut in this distance and which has also served to crown him Balearic champion.
In the shorter distance races parallel to the Marathon, British athletes Louise Cartmell and James McKenzie won the 21k with 1h23:20 and 1h3:02, respectively, while Argentina's Sofía Luna and Germany's Yannick Reihs won the 9k. Rehis repeated his first place from 2021.
The race paid tribute at the start to veteran athlete Emilio de La Camara, the most successful age group athlete at national level, with the awarding of the "Dorsal de Oro”.
