You want to calculate your half marathon pace based on your half marathon finish time?

It's easy: With our pace calculator you will not only find out your half marathon pace, but you will also be provided with a pace table for the entire half marathon.

How does it work? Simply enter your target time and click on "Calculate pace". Your pace will be displayed immediately below and the half marathon pace table will be updated with a target time::

Calculate your half marathon pace

Distance: km

Target time: Hours (Format hh:mm:ss)

CALCULATE PACE

Pace: in min/km (Format hh:mm:ss)

Pace: in km/h

Converted to miles, this gives a pace of ? per mile.

How long is a half marathon?

The half marathon race got its course length from the marathon race. Since the marathon has a precisely defined distance of 42.195 kilometers, the half marathon is logically half as long. This results in a course length of 21.0975 kilometers for the half marathon.

To successfully compete in a half marathon, you should follow a half marathon training plan for a period of 8 - 12 weeks.

Why use a pace calculator for the half marathon?

Almost every athlete who wants to participate in a half marathon race sets a time as a goal for this event. However, it is hardly possible to actually run this time if you don't know in advance what pace you have to keep per kilometer in order to reach this goal.

With the pace calculator you know to the second exactly what pace you have to run during a half marathon. So you'll know mile by mile during the half marathon if you're still on course for your half marathon goal.

What are the benefits of the half marathon pace chart?

Quite simply, a pace chart for the race is incredibly clear. So you know for each kilometer of the race what time you need to reach at this point in time, so that you are still on course towards the target time.

The pace chart tells you for each kilometer what time you should be at that point in the race. If you are e.g. 30 seconds over after 15 kilometers, you are a bit too slow, if you are even below, you are faster than planned.

What is the difference between min/km and km/h?

First of all, as a runner, forget about the speed in km/h, i.e. kilometers per hour. This information has not been accepted in running, because it is much more complex to interpret than the min/km.

The indication "min/km" can be explained very simply: This unit indicates how many minutes (and seconds) you need for one kilometer: 04:30 (or 00:04:30) would therefore be a pace of 4 minutes and 30 seconds per kilometer. This means that you need four and a half minutes for a distance of exactly one kilometer.

How do I see my pace while running?

For this you need to rely on a technical device with GPS measurement. This can be either a running watch, smartwatch or running app.

Most runners rely on sports watches or running watches, because they display many other useful functions live (such as heart rate) and, unlike the running app, you don't have to take your smartphone with you when you run.

Modern running watches show you both your current pace, which is the pace you are running right now, but also your average pace, which is the pace you have been running on average since you started the activity.

What pace is good for a half marathon?

Basically, a half marathon performance of 3 hours is just as respectable as a half marathon time of one hour. How fast you can actually run depends on many factors, including talent, gender, age, training, experience and current form.

In 2020, Kenya's Kibiwott Kandie became the first person in the world to run the half marathon in under 58 minutes, clocking 57:32. That's an incredible mileage average of 2:44 minutes. There is probably no amateur athlete who can run this pace for just one kilometer. Kibiwott Kandie managed that for more than 21 kilometers.

With a half marathon time in 1 hour, he is still an absolute world class runner and must also manage a kilometer average of well under 3 minutes with 2:51 minutes.

Ambitious hobby runners, on the other hand, often achieve times around 80 minutes, which corresponds to a pace of 3:48 minutes. For a half marathon in 90 minutes, the good 21 kilometers in 4:16 min/km are a prerequisite. A half marathon in 2 hours requires a pace of 5:41 min/km. For 2:30 hours, 7:07 min/km is a prerequisite, and for 3 hours, 8:32 min/km must be planned.
