Marathons around the world
The largest marathon in the world is the New York City Marathon, with around 50,000 starters. It is followed by the Berlin Marathon, the Paris Marathon, the Tokyo Marathon and the London Marathon, each with around 40,000 finishers. The Boston Marathon also has a similarly large starting field. Another classic race in the USA is the Chicago Marathon.
Marathon recommendations in Europe
Other well-known and popular marathons in Europe are the Amsterdam Marathon and the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands, the Rome Marathon in Italy, the Athens Marathon in Greece, the Valencia Marathon in Spain, the Stockholm Marathon in Sweden and the Prague Marathon in the Czech Republic. If you want to run in the dark, it's worth starting at the Luxembourg Night Marathon. German athletes also like to travel to the Palma de Mallorca Marathon in Spain. The only marathon in the world that crosses two continents is the Istanbul Marathon in Turkey. The Italians have some very nice mountain marathons with the Stelvio Marathon and the Brixen Dolomiten Marathon, among others. The first big marathon of the year, on the other hand, takes place in Switzerland. Because there the starting signal falls with the New Year Marathon in Zurich exactly at the turn of the year.
Exceptional marathons
One of the most famous mountain marathons is the Jungfrau Marathon in Switzerland, where the finish line is at the foot of the three famous mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Another scenic and impressive marathon is the Spitsbergen Marathon. It is the northernmost marathon in the world. However, it gets icy cold not only on the island of Spitsbergen, but also in Russia at the Baikal Ice Marathon. A classic in France is the Marathon du Medoc, where you can drink a glass or two of wine at the aid stations.
