Why is a pace calculator used?

Pace calculators allow the runner to determine the pace for a desired distance without manual calculation. For example, if your marathon training plan recommends a time of 4 hours for the marathon, you need to know exactly what pace you need to run in order to reach the target time.

The running pace is always given in "minutes per kilometer". This is how the pace calculator determines how fast you need to run the kilometer to reach your goal.

What is the marathon pace chart for?

The pace only tells you how fast you have to run each kilometer. So that you don't lose the overview in the marathon, the use of a pace table is recommended. The target time for each kilometer is displayed on it. For example, after 25 kilometers you can see what time should have elapsed at this point in the race. If your real time is above, you are too slow, if your real time is below, you are too fast. The pace table helps you to keep your pace constant over the whole marathon distance.

Why is the pace given in "min/km" or in "mi/km"?

When you drive a car, the speed is given in km/h, i.e. in kilometers per speed. However, this parameter is too confusing for running and has not caught on. Much easier to understand is the speed in min/km - that is, in minutes per kilometer. Because with this you know to the second exactly what time you may invest per kilometer so that you reach your goal.

Can the pace also be calculated manually?

Yes, but only with great difficulty, which is why we offer the Marathon Pace Calculator free of charge.

Is the pace displayed on sports watches and running apps?

All modern running watches and running apps will show you the pace, both in min/km and in km/h. Different parameters can be displayed, such as the average pace, the current pace or the lap pace.

The average pace is the average pace you run over the whole session. This parameter is the most important, because it allows you to immediately see if your pace is in line with the goal.

The current pace is the exact pace you are running right now. You can see if you are running slower or faster than your average pace.

Das große Laufbuch der Trainingspläne

The lap pace indicates the pace for a certain period of time or a certain distance. Classically, running watches count one lap after each kilometer. This is quite practical. Because this way you can see whether you have become faster or slower in the course of the marathon.

What pace do you run in a marathon?

Top runners cover the marathon in under 3 minutes per kilometer. In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge became the first person in the world to run a marathon in under 2 hours. To do so, he had needed only 2:50 minutes per kilometer.

The World Athletics Federation had set a qualification limit of 2:11:30 hours for men and 2:29:30 hours for women for the Olympic Games in Japan. That would be a pace of 3:07 minutes or 3:33 minutes per kilometer. So if you want to go to the Olympics, you know how fast you have to run now.

If you want to break the 3-hour mark as an ambitious hobby runner, you have to cover more than 42 kilometers at a pace of 4:16 minutes. For 4 hours, 5:41 minutes per kilometer is sufficient, for 5 hours, 7:07 minutes is sufficient, and for 6 hours, 8:32 minutes per kilometer is sufficient.
