One of the fastest half marathons in the world celebrated its big comeback on April 2, 2022.

For by now, well over 1,000 days had passed since the last time the Prague Half Marathon was held, after the event had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021.

10,000 half marathon runners in Prague

For the big comeback race, RunCzech organizers were in good spirits to achieve a similarly large field of participants as in 2019. Because back then, more than 10,000 runners finished the biggest marathon race in the Czech Republic.

One of the fastest half marathons in the world

This Saturday, the starting gun was fired at 10:00 am for the half marathon race, which has even been the scene of world records in the past. Just remember back to 2017, where Jocyiline Jepkosgei set a women's world record of 64:52 minutes. While the world record has since been significantly lowered, Jepkosgei's time remains the course record in Prague. In the men's race, Atsedu Tsegay ran a sub-59 minute time of 58:47 ten years ago. It was one of the best half marathon performances in the world at the time.

The defending champions

In the last edition on April 6, 2019, Kenyan Benard Kimeli won. His 59:07 minutes was only slightly slower than Tsegay's course record. The 2019 women's winner, Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui also achieved an outstanding time of 1:05:44.

Similar stellar times should be seen at the 2022 Prague Half Marathon. After all, some outstanding top runners from abroad were signed up.

Ninefold victory for Kenya

However, the cool temperatures and too strong wind ruined chances for records. Kenya's dominance in Prague was impressive. In the men's race, Keneth Kiprop Renju led a nine-way victory for Kenya after 59:28 minutes. The top 4 all stayed under an hour. Defending champion Benard Kimeli, however, narrowly missed the podium in fourth. The best non-African was Austrian Andreas Vojta in 13th place with 1:03:18 hours.

In the women's race, too, only athletes from Kenya were represented on the podium. After 1:06:57 hours Nesphine Jepleting was the only runner under 67 minutes.
