With about two million inhabitants, Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe!
The most popular sports in Slovenia include basketball, handball, soccer and various winter sports, such as ski jumping and skiing.
The most beautiful vacation regions in Slovenia are in the north the Triglav National Park, named after the highest mountain in the country, and in the southwest on the Gulf of Trieste resorts such as Portoroz and Koper.
The biggest running events in Slovenia
The most famous sporting events are held in Ljubljana and also on the coast of Slovenia. The biggest marathon event in Slovenia is the Ljubljanski Marathon in the capital city of Ljubljana. This marathon is always held at the end of October and is attended by more than 1,000 runners. Other shorter distance races are also held at the event in the center of Slovenia. Another popular marathon is the Marathon Radenci.
Adventure Slovenia
Great adventure runs can also be found in Slovenia: for example, there is the Julian Alps Trail Run. The resort of Kranjska Gora is known not only for its ski resort, but also for its many summer activities. The main competition at this event is the Ultra Sky Trail. This almost 60 kilometer long run leads to the border with Austria. Significantly shorter is the Red Bull 400 Planica. This run is only a few hundred meters long. But they are quite a challenge. You have to reach the top of the ski jump in Planica.
Triathlon on the coast and in the national park
Even though only a small part of Slovenia is located by the sea, it is perfectly suitable for triathlon events. That is why the IRONMAN 70.3 Slovenian Istria will be held in Koper. This is a middle distance triathlon of the IRONMAN series. Unfortunately, however, the race was discontinued after 2021.
In the north of Slovenia near the Triglav National Park, on the other hand, Challenge Bled attracts triathlon fans to sporting activity over a middle-distance race in the spring.
