Almost no other month has as many running events as May!
So there is definitely a suitable running offer for every runner this month. Every weekend, numerous marathons, half-marathons and fun runs take place in the surrounding area. Also the popular obstacle runs have an extensive offer this month. In the same way, several corporate running series start their season. Triathlon fans can also take part in the first major competitions.
3 huge running events
There are really big running events in the USA with two races that are just less known in Europe. There is the Bay to Breakers in San Francisco. The 12-kilometer race was first held in 1912. It is one of the largest road races in the USA.
One of the largest road races in the world is also held in Boulder, Colorado. Around 50,000 athletes have competed in the 10-kilometer "Bolder Boulder" every year since 1979.
And while we're on the subject of "major events," let's not forget the Wings For Life World Run. The worldwide charity run even has more than 100,000 registered runners each year.
Marathon and Half Marathon in Europe
If you fancy a running trip, you'll be almost overwhelmed with a wide range of attractive running events in May: Marathon runners have interesting options with the marathons in Copenhagen and Prague. Over the half-marathon distance, a trip to Sweden could be worthwhile, where the GöteborgsVarvet reaches participant numbers of more than 40,000.
In the UK, on the other hand, the Great Manchester Run has established itself as one of the biggest 10-kilometer races on the planet.
Event tips for Germany
In Germany, of course, it's difficult to choose a few recommendations from among 600 running events. For women, there's the Berlin Women's Run, a charity race with more than 10,000 runners. The Rennsteiglauf, Germany's largest nature marathon, is also held in May. The 18.2-kilometer Schluchseelauf in Baden-Württemberg, which has been held since 1985, also has a long tradition.
Marathons can be run in Regensburg, Mainz or Gelsenkirchen, among other places.
A run for soccer fans
In Austria, it's not just the Wings for Life World Run that takes center stage in May. Marathon runners will find a very good offer at the Salzburg Marathon, for example. The company runs in Klagenfurt and Bruck an der Mur are also very popular. Soccer fans, on the other hand, can compete in the Rapid-Lauf in Vienna.
Those who want to get away from the city and enjoy the great outdoors can try their luck at the Stuiben Trailrun in Tyrol or the Schafberglauf in Salzkammergut.
