Almost 29 months had passed since the last staging of the IRONMAN 70.3 in Barcelona.
After last year's cancellation due to corona, the middle distance race was scheduled for the fall this year instead of the traditional spring date.
Calella starting point of IRONMAN 70.3
The IRONMAN 70.3 was started this morning on the beach of Calella. The swim course took the athletes counterclockwise into the Mediterranean Sea, before changing to the bike course after 1.9 kilometers near the swim start.
Beautiful route along the Mediterranean Sea
Now came the 90-kilometer (56-mile) bike discipline. After a loop in Calella, the beautiful course led along the coast into the interior of the country before returning to the transition point in Calella. After the flat and fast bike course, the final half marathon race was the deciding factor. The race was run along the Mediterranean Sea to the turnaround point in Pineda de Mar. The finish was again in Calella.
Times around 4 hours
Winning times of around four hours were to be expected among the top athletes. Since 2018, Spain's Javier Gomez and Britain's Emma Pallant have held the course records with 4:01:38 hours and 4:32:53 hours, respectively. The defending champions from the last edition in 2019 were Belgium's Bart Aernouts (4:05:07 hours) and Britain's Fenella Langridge (4:37:42 hours).
