Actually, on October 9, 2021, the IRONMAN 70.3 Lanzarote should have celebrated its 10th anniversary.
But after the cancellation last year, it was on October 9, 2021 only the 9th staging. However, it is only less than half a year until the big anniversary: because in 2022 the middle distance race will already be held on March 19.
The course
Early this morning, the race started at 8:00 am from the Marina Rubicon. After 1.9 kilometers of swimming, the first discipline was completed at Playa Doarada. Now 90 kilometers had to be covered by bike in the south of the island. The 2 x 40 kilometers and 1 x 10 kilometers long circuit showed the most beautiful sides of Lanzarote. After the cycling, the half marathon race at Playa Blanca decided the race victory.
The winners
The last edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Lanzarote two years ago was won by the German Frederic Funk ahead of the Belgian duo Peiter Heemeryck and Kenneth Vandendriessche. In the women's race, Britain's Emma Pallant took the role of defending champion after her compatriot Lucy Gossage still won in 2018
Man of the day was the Dane Daniel Bækkegård. He achieved the second best time in all three disciplines. Thus he was the first to cross the finish line after 4:03:30 hours. He was followed one minute behind by German Mika Noodt, who secured a commanding second place thanks to a fast half marathon.
In the women's race Anne Haug lived up to her role as favorite. After 1:20:48 hours, the German had a lead of more than eight minutes over Nikki Bartlett from Great Britain. Especially in the half marathon Haug was clearly superior to her competitors.
