The Madrid Half Marathon was allowed to celebrate a comeback this weekend after a break of almost two and a half years.

With more than 16,000 runners, the race in Madrid is one of the largest half marathons in Spain. For 2021, there was a new route that went through the city center on a slightly flatter course with fewer meters of elevation.

Records set by runners from Kenya

In addition to the half marathon race, a 5-kilometer charity run was also part of the event. Absolute world class times were not possible due to the profiled course. The half marathon record in this race is 1:01:47 hours. This time was achieved by Kenyan Kipkemoi Kiprono in the last edition so far on August 7, 2019. In the women's race, the record of Cynthia Jerotich is now seven years old. She managed an outstanding time of 1:09:40 hours in 2014.

The top favorites this year were also athletes from Kenya. In the men's race were Jonathan In the women's race, Irene Jepchumba and Sandrafelis Tuei entered with chances of winning.

Unusual November date

For the first time, the race was held in November. Due to the Covid 19 measures, the organizers set the new date almost a year ago. Because traditionally Madrid and the half marathon victory is run in early April.

New records on a new course

The new course setting paid off this year. For in both the women's and men's races, the old Madrid records were pulverized. In the men's race, Ronald Kiprotich Kirui led an eight-way victory for Kenya. He finished in 59:38, more than two minutes under the previous record. Overall, the top 7 managed times under 60 minutes. The best Spaniard was Houssame Eddine Benabbou in 12th place with 1:04:56 hours.

There was also a winner from Kenya in the women's race. Nelly Jepchumba also set a new record with 1:07:46 hours. The top 5 all remained under the old record mark.
