City Marathons in Austria
Undisputed for decades, the Vienna City Marathon is Austria's largest marathon event. For more than 30 years, the marathon in Vienna has been an integral part of the domestic running calendar and has also established itself internationally as one of the best-known running events. It is not for nothing that the event has been awarded the World Athletics Label, one of the highest awards of the World Athletics Federation, for several years now. Every year, more than 30,000 athletes take part in this running event, with around 6,000 runners covering the full distance of 42.195 km. The top international runners achieve times that are only a few minutes above the marathon world record. The remaining starters in Vienna are distributed among the supporting events such as the half marathon, relay marathon and children's races. More than 12,000 athletes take part in the half marathon.
In addition to the Vienna City Marathon, the Linz Marathon (Upper Austria), the Wachau Marathon (Lower Austria), the Salzburg Marathon, the Graz Marathon (Styria) and the 3-Länder Marathon on Lake Constance are among the largest and best-known running events in Austria that offer an event over the marathon distance. The latter event leads not only through Austria, but also through Germany and Switzerland. All of these marathons are city marathons and for the most part lead through a major city. In total, these six marathons are contested by over 10,000 participants each year.
Beautiful marathons
If you're looking for a scenic marathon, the selection of marathons outside of cities in our country is terrific. An absolute classic is the WelschLauf (Styria) which takes place in the first half of the year and is considered by many participants to be the most beautiful scenic marathon in Austria. But the Salzkammergut Marathon, which takes place as part of the Wolfgangsee Run, is similarly fantastic. After the start in Bad Ischl, the runners head towards Wolfgangsee, where a whole loop around the lake awaits them. In addition to many meters of altitude, the athletes should also enjoy a great panorama.
How about a mountain marathon?
If you want to collect a lot of altitude meters in addition to a great landscape, then a mountain marathon is exactly the right thing for you. And of course there are also in our alpine republic. Well-known mountain races include the Montafon Arlberg Marathon, the Pitztal-Imst Glacier Marathon and the Kaisermarathon in Tyrol. Most mountain runs take place in the west of the country.
