About 20 marathon events are held in Switzerland every year. In addition to some well-known city marathons, marathons in the mountains enjoy a great tradition.
For many years, the starting signal for the marathon season has been given on New Year's Day - because that's when runners can run the full marathon distance at the New Year's Marathon Zurich.
City marathons in spring and fall
The first major city marathon also takes place in Zurich. The Zurich Marathon, which takes place in spring, is expected to attract several thousand participants over the 42.195 km distance. The race runs through Zurich's old town and has proven to be a very fast course. According to the organizers, around 70% of participants in the Zurich marathon run a new best time.
Other major city marathons include the Geneva Marathon (spring) and the SwissCityMarathon Lucerne (fall).
Marathon on the mountain
Internationally, Switzerland is known for its beautiful mountain runs and trails. Among them there are also two mountain marathons, which are known to almost every runner and are usually also booked up quickly. The absolute classic is the Jungfrau Marathon which leads up the "Jungfrau". Along the 42.195 km route, almost 2,000 meters of altitude await the approximately 4,000 marathon runners. The marathon, which starts in Interlaken, is always held in late summer.
At the beginning of summer, another marathon attracts mountain runners en masse: The Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon! Here, 42.195 km or even over 45 km with about 2,500 meters of altitude can be covered. About 2,700 mountain enthusiasts are expected every year.
So the marathon lover can expect an exciting and varied offer in Switzerland. There is something for fast "flatland runners" as well as for nature lovers.
