Trail runs are booming more than ever. There are now over 50 trail events in Austria. And every year there are a few more. There are now trail events in all of Austria's provinces. But what is the difference between trails and traditional mountain runs?
What is a trail and what is a mountain run?
A mountain run usually starts in the valley and leads to the summit or at least very high up a mountain. The winner is the one who reaches the summit or the finish on the mountain first. A few mountain runs also involve running back downhill or completing another additional climb, which brings us to the smooth transition of trail runs.
Trails often involve running along mountains rather than up them. Trails are often longer than typical mountain runs, but still sometimes have many 1,000 meters of elevation gain that runners must overcome in addition. In addition, some trails are not only run on or along one mountain, but several mountains. However, there is no hundred percent separation between mountain runs and trails. Some organizers have even changed their event name from mountain run to trail without making any changes to the course.
Which trail runs are there in Austria?
About 50 trails take place mostly in spring, summer and autumn from April to October. As a runner you are spoiled for choice in Austria. Almost every weekend, one top-class event follows the next. It is very difficult to give some recommendations. Especially in Tyrol the offer is large. A classic is the Silvretta Run 3000, which attracts around 600 participants to Ischgl every year. The great thing about it is that the three different distances, from the marathon to the short 11 km trail, offer the right run for both professionals and beginners.
The Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail is also a real blast, also of course in the Tyrolean mountain paradise. The longest run covers 100 km and almost 7,000 vertical meters, the shortest 15 km and just under 1,000 vertical meters. Thus, the trail in the Pitzal is also perfect for beginners as well as experienced runners. And the Alpine panorama is certainly magnificent for both groups.
A little further east in Austria, the Schneeberglauf has made a name for itself. For some years now, however, the Schneebergtrail has also been held as part of this event. This has now become the most popular trail event in Lower Austria. On the 32 km long course the starters have to overcome more than 2,000 meters of altitude.
Meanwhile, there are also trail events in and around cities, including Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna.
